About

The aim of this publication is to compile an updated checklist of all butterflies occurring on Hispaniola. We will also discuss several species that were reported from the island but seem not to occur there, and a number of species that were reported from the island but seem to be inapplicable.

Hispaniola is a the second largest Caribbean island, situated in the center of the Caribbean biodiversity hotspot. The island is shared by Haiti in the west and the Dominican Republic in the east. The similarities between the butterfly faunas of these two countries are much more prominent than the differences. It seems therefore sensible to compile a list, including the species of both countries on Hispaniola.

    1. Hi Steve, the books and lists that exist for Hispaniola: Schwartz (1983/1989), Takizawa et al (2003), Perez-Gelabert (2008) do not agree with each other.
Other works, e.g. Spencer Smith, Miller, Miller (1994) “The Butterflies of the West Indies and South Florida” or Warren et al (2012/2013) don’t contain specific lists for Hispaniola.
Furthermore new research e.g. by Robbins and collaborators (1998a, 1998b, 2002), by Sourakov and Zakharov (2011) and by Matos-MaravĂ et al (2014) changed our knowledge on the butterfly fauna of Hispaniola.
I hope to finish this manuscript in 2 weeks and will then recommend the finished list. You will find the finished list here as: The Good
